Biography

The band Devotos was formed in 1988 in the community of Alto José do Pinho, in Recife, initially under the name Devotos do Ódio. The original lineup featured Cannibal on bass and vocals, Neilton on guitar, and Celo Brown on drums, bringing a strong influence of punk rock, hardcore, and post-punk from bands like Joy Division and São Paulo's Inocentes and Cólera. Adopting a do-it-yourself aesthetic, guitarist Neilton became known for making his own instruments and equipment, helping to shape the unique sound and visual identity of the group from Pernambuco.

With a trajectory marked by overcoming social barriers and resistance in their home community, the band expanded its recognition nationally over the decades. Among their standout works are albums like Agora tá Valendo and Punk Reggae, as well as memorable collaborations alongside artists such as Chico César, Pitty, and Black Pantera. The group's cultural importance was crowned in March 2024, when the band was officially declared Intangible Cultural Heritage of Recife.

Remaining firm in their underground roots, the musicians built a lasting legacy that dialogues with both northeastern tradition and urban protest. Alongside fundamental names in Brazilian rock such as Inocentes and Cólera, Devotos paved the way for the independent scene and continue to inspire new generations of musicians and social projects through initiatives like the NGO Alto Falante.
