Biography

Dina Di, born Viviane Lopes Matias, was a pioneering Brazilian rapper and singer who became a prominent figure in the national rap scene. Emerging as the vocalist of the group Visão de Rua, she broke barriers as the first woman to achieve mainstream success in Brazilian rap, frequently earning the title of the greatest Brazilian female rapper of all time.

Starting her musical journey at the tender age of 13 in 1989, she initially played the guitar before transitioning into a powerful vocalist and lyricist during her adolescence. Her hard-hitting rhymes fearlessly addressed deep-seated social issues, tackling urban violence, systemic racism, and pervasive sexism while capturing her personal struggles. Throughout her impactful career, she released several notable singles and six albums alongside Visão de Rua, cementing her legacy in hip-hop alongside contemporary peers like MV Bill.

Her contributions to Brazilian music were widely recognized, culminating in a victory at the 2009 Prêmio Hutúz, where she was honored as the best solo artist or group of the decade in the female category. Tragically, her life was cut short in March 2010 due to complications from a hospital infection following the birth of her daughter. Her enduring cultural impact was further commemorated when Google featured her on a homepage Doodle on what would have been her 46th birthday.
