Biography
Dircinha Batista, artistic name of Dirce Grandino de Oliveira, was born in São Paulo on April 7, 1922 and stood out as one of the greatest singers and actresses of the Golden Age of Brazilian radio. Daughter of Batista Júnior and sister of Linda Batista, Dircinha began her artistic journey in childhood, performing in festivals and in her father's shows starting at six years of age, having recorded her first album in 1930 for the Columbia record label.
National consecration came after being sponsored by Francisco Alves on Rádio Cajuti, who nicknamed her "the girl who had a bird's throat." Over a career spanning more than four decades, she recorded hundreds of 78 rpm records, establishing herself as one of the main interpreters of carnival marchinhas and sambas, in addition to winning the title of Queen of Radio in 1948. Along with her sister Linda, she received recognition as a "national heritage" from President Getúlio Vargas and was part of the cast of several successful cinematic chanchadas.
In the 1970s, deeply shaken by the death of her mother and the partial oblivion of her work, Dircinha permanently stepped away from the stage and began living in seclusion. Her life and artistic partnership with her sister were later immortalized in the theater through the musical Somos Irmãs. The singer passed away in Rio de Janeiro on April 18, 1999, leaving an indelible legacy in the history of Brazilian popular music and national broadcasting.
