Biography
Divergência Socialista is an experimental rock group formed in Belo Horizonte in the mid-1980s. The band emerged from the early days of the Sexo Explícito collective, with a proposal that blended post-punk, dadaism, minimalism, and tropical influences, always seeking to break away from the musical standards of the time. The original lineup featured Marcelo Dolabela (lyrics and vocals), Gato Jair (vocals), Fabiane Andropov (vocals), John (bass), and Rubinho Troll (drums).
Throughout its trajectory, Divergência Socialista stood out for its innovative approach, uniting music, word, and noise, with a DIY (do-it-yourself) aesthetic and conceptual experimentation. The band engaged with various artistic avant-gardes, such as dadaism, surrealism, and modernism, as well as drawing inspiration from names like Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, and Os Mutantes. The group's lineup went through several modifications over the years, but kept Marcelo Dolabela as the central figure, alongside vocalists such as Silma Bijoux O'Hara, who became a loyal partner.
The group ended its activities in the late 1980s, but its influence endures in the alternative scene of Minas Gerais. In more recent years, Divergência Socialista resumed its activities, releasing new recordings and performing live shows. The band is recognized for its free, dissonant, and urgent attitude, keeping the ethics of experimentation and artistic transgression alive, echoing Dolabela's maxim: "and it's going to get worse!".
