Biography

DJ Dolores, born Hélder Aragão in Propriá in 1966, is a prominent Brazilian singer, songwriter, designer, writer, and DJ. Growing up immersed in music due to his father, he was exposed to jazz, choro, and tropicália before discovering punk rock and British bands during his adolescence in Aracaju. Upon moving to Recife in 1984, he connected with key figures of the burgeoning manguebit movement, including Chico Science and Fred Zero Quatro.

As a central figure in the Recife cultural scene, Aragão adopted the moniker DJ Dolores—inspired by a grumpy aunt of his collaborator Hilton Lacerda—and formed the multimedia duo Dolores e Morales. He contributed significantly to the aesthetic and visual arts of the movement, notably designing the cover for Chico Science & Nação Zumbi's seminal album Da Lama ao Caos. In 1998, he founded DJ Dolores e Orchestra Santa Massa, releasing acclaimed albums such as Contraditório? and expanding his performances to international festivals.

Beyond his band work, DJ Dolores has built a prolific career composing soundtracks for cinema, theater, and dance companies, collaborating with directors and choreographers across Brazil. His eclectic musical output incorporates electronic music, hip hop, hardcore, and traditional Northeastern rhythms like maracatu and coco, cementing his status as an innovative force in contemporary Brazilian music alongside artists like Gilberto Gil.
