Biography

Dhananjaya “DJ” Perera is a Sri Lankan-born artist, educator, and entrepreneur who has established a significant presence in the art world, particularly in Fort Worth, Texas. Born and raised in Qatar, Perera's artistic journey began early, nurtured by his mother's encouragement. He pursued fine arts academically, earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts in studio art from Texas Christian University (TCU) and a Master of Fine Arts in painting and drawing from Pratt Institute in New York. His work often explores his Sri Lankan heritage, initially through psychedelic pours and abstract imagery in series like "VIRILITY," "CULTURALISM," "BLACK on BLACK," and "TRANSCENDENCE."

Perera's artistic style has evolved, with a notable shift towards highly detailed achromatic pointillism drawings that have garnered significant regional acclaim. His art is recognized for its ability to blend traditional techniques with contemporary approaches, often incorporating elements that reflect his cultural background, such as Sri Lankan tea wash in his depictions of wildlife. He has received numerous accolades and commissions, including work for TCU's permanent art collection and exhibitions at various institutions. Perera also founded the "New Arts Media New Arts Learning" (NAMNAL) program, which aims to connect high school students with emerging technologies in art.

Beyond his artistic practice, DJ Perera is also a dedicated educator, teaching AP art at Boswell High School in Eagle Mountain Saginaw ISD. He has served as an art educator for several years, inspiring young students through art and culture.
