Biography

Djalma Novaes Corrêa was born in Ouro Preto, on November 18, 1942, and established himself as one of the great instrumentalists and composers of Brazilian instrumental music. He graduated in Salvador, deepening his knowledge in percussion and composition at the Federal University of Bahia (UFBA) alongside fundamental names such as Walter Smetak and Hans-Joachim Koellreutter. His artistic trajectory was marked by intense sound research, collaborating with various exponents of our music, such as Gilberto Gil and Paulo Moura.

Throughout his career, Djalma integrated and led innovative projects, such as the group Baiafro and the Quarteto Negro, the latter alongside Zezé Motta, Paulo Moura, and Jorge Degas. He also stood out on the international scene by developing, in partnership with the Goethe Institut, the jazz festival "The German All Stars Old Friend", which brought German musicians closer to artists of different nationalities. His discography encompasses works of great relevance to percussion and instrumental music, including striking albums such as "Xingú: Guitar & Percussion" and "Banda Cauim".

Djalma Corrêa passed away on December 8, 2022, at the age of 80, in the city of Rio de Janeiro, a victim of pancreatic cancer. His contribution to Brazilian percussion and to the dissemination of instrumental culture remains an invaluable legacy for future generations of musicians in the country.
