Biography

Djalma Ferreira was a Brazilian pianist, composer, and conductor, born in Rio de Janeiro on May 5, 1913. He began his musical studies at the age of 12 and later moved to Italy, where he took piano and violin lessons. Upon returning to Brazil, he became an integral part of the Rio de Janeiro bohemian music scene, frequenting its vibrant nightlife and becoming acquainted with prominent figures like Noel Rosa. Ferreira's career saw him perform in prestigious venues such as the Hotel Quitandinha in Petrópolis and the Cassino da Urca in Rio de Janeiro during the 1940s.

In 1945, Ferreira founded the ensemble "Milionários do Ritmo" (Millionaires of Rhythm), with whom he recorded several albums throughout the 1950s and 1960s. The group achieved significant popularity, performing in nightclubs and at dances, and also toured internationally, including a stint in Peru in 1946. Ferreira was also a prolific composer, with notable works including "Bicharada," "Cheiro de Saudade," "Recado," "Lamento," "Murmúrio," and "Devaneio." His composition "Recado," also known as "Recado Bossa Nova," became particularly famous and was recorded by numerous international artists.

In 1963, Ferreira moved to the United States, settling in Hollywood, California, and later in Las Vegas. He continued his musical career there, performing and contributing to the introduction of Brazilian rhythms to the American scene. Djalma Ferreira passed away on September 28, 2004, in Las Vegas, Nevada, leaving behind a rich legacy as a composer and instrumentalist who bridged Brazilian music with international jazz and popular styles.
