Biography

DMN is a Brazilian rap group formed in São Paulo in 1989 by members Markão II, Elly, Max Telefone de Contato, DJ Slick, Eli Efi, and Xis. Emerging from local rap and battle scenes, the group made its first major appearance on the compilation album Consciência Black, Vol II with the track "Isso não se faz," which addressed global racism. Following this introduction, they released their debut album Cada Vez Mais Preto in 1993, featuring notable tracks such as "4P" and "Como Pode Estar Tudo Bem."

Throughout the 1990s and 2000s, DMN solidified its presence in the national hip hop movement. Their breakthrough came in 1998 with the highly popular song "Homem de Aço," which featured Edi Rock of Racionais MC's and was later honored at the Hutúz Awards as one of the best tracks of the decade. Their subsequent album, Saída de Emergência, further established their reputation with powerful collaborations involving Mano Brown, Edi Rock, and KL Jay. Over the years, the group continued to release impactful material, including the live album and DVD DMN: Ao Vivo in 2002, followed by the critically anticipated album Essa é a Cena in 2004, which featured production by Elly and contributions from artists like Lino Krizz and Sandrão.

Beyond their musical contributions, DMN has actively engaged in social outreach, participating in community projects aimed at raising awareness among youth in peripheral neighborhoods across Brazil. Through lectures, debates, and cultural initiatives, the group has used its platform to foster education and social change. Their enduring legacy in Brazilian rap is marked by a deep commitment to addressing social inequalities while maintaining a strong connection to their roots in São Paulo.
