Biography

Dom Belchior Joaquim da Silva Neto was a prominent Brazilian clergyman and bishop, born on November 7, 1918, in Araújos, Minas Gerais. He was a member of the Congregation of the Mission (Lazarists) and dedicated his life to serving the Catholic Church. His episcopal motto was "Charitas Christi Urget," meaning "The love of Christ urges."

He was ordained a priest on December 8, 1945, and later consecrated as a bishop on April 24, 1960. Dom Belchior served as the second Bishop of the Diocese of Luz, Minas Gerais, from 1967 to 1994. During his tenure, he was instrumental in significant developments within the diocese, including the creation of deaneries, the establishment of the Diocesan Seminary and the Faculty of Luz, and the renaming of the diocese from "Diocese do Aterrado" to "Diocese de Luz." He also played an active role in the Second Vatican Council.

Dom Belchior is particularly remembered for his role in the creation of the Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion, an initiative he championed and successfully implemented in the Diocese of Luz, which later spread worldwide. His legacy is marked by his dedication, joy, optimism, and profound commitment to his flock. He passed away on May 24, 2000, in Belo Horizonte, leaving behind a lasting impact on the Church in Brazil.
