Biography

Dom Pedro I, born Pedro de Alcântara in Queluz, Portugal, in 1798, is widely known for his historical role as the first Emperor of Brazil, but his figure also holds relevance in the Brazilian musical sphere as the composer of the Anthem of Independence. After accompanying the royal family in their transfer to Brazil in 1807, fleeing Napoleonic troops, Pedro assumed the regency of the country and eventually proclaimed the Independence of Brazil on September 7, 1822.

In addition to his striking political trajectory—which included the First Reign, dynastic crises, the abdication of the Brazilian throne in 1831, and his subsequent return to Europe to lead the liberal forces in Portugal—Dom Pedro I demonstrated artistic sensitivity. He composed the music for the Anthem of Independence, with lyrics by Evaristo da Veiga, cementing his name in the history of the country's culture and civic music.

His musical work reflects the patriotic spirit of the Brazilian imperial period, connecting to the tradition of composers and historical figures linked to the formation of national identity. Dom Pedro I passed away in 1834, leaving a lasting political and cultural legacy in both Brazil and Portugal.
