Biography
Dom Salvador, born Salvador da Silva Filho in Rio Claro, is a renowned Brazilian pianist, arranger, and composer. Emerging from the vibrant musical scene of Rio de Janeiro following the bossa nova movement, he helped shape the samba jazz genre by blending Brazilian samba with American jazz while performing at the legendary Beco das Garrafas.
Later in his career, he pioneered samba-funk and samba-soul with his self-titled 1969 album and subsequently formed the groundbreaking Grupo Abolição, featuring musicians such as Oberdan Magalhães. His visionary work with Abolição significantly influenced the Black Rio movement by uniting an all-Black lineup of musicians to celebrate Afro-Brazilian rhythms.
After relocating to the United States in 1973, he established himself in the New York jazz scene and served as musical director for Harry Belafonte. Over the decades, his monumental contributions have earned him enduring acclaim alongside contemporaries like Tenório Júnior and César Camargo Mariano.
