Biography
Dominguinhos, born José Domingos de Morais in Garanhuns, Pernambuco, was one of Brazil's most revered accordionists, singers, and composers. Raised in a humble family of sixteen children, he began playing the accordion at the age of six, performing in local fairs. His life changed significantly after a chance encounter with the legendary Luiz Gonzaga, who invited him to Rio de Janeiro and became his mentor. In Rio, Gonzaga gifted him his first professional accordion and gave him the stage name Dominguinhos. \n\nThroughout the 1950s and 1960s, Dominguinhos established himself as a versatile musician, moving beyond the traditional forró of his roots to incorporate elements of choro, samba, and jazz. He was a member of the original Trio Nordestino and formed a long-lasting personal and professional partnership with the songwriter Anastácia, with whom he wrote over 200 songs, including the classic hit "Eu só quero um xodó." His technical mastery and unique phrasing made him a favorite collaborator for elite MPB artists like Gilberto Gil, Gal Costa, and Chico Buarque.\n\nBy the 1970s and 80s, Dominguinhos had achieved national stardom, successfully blending regional Northeastern rhythms with sophisticated pop and bossa nova arrangements. He won multiple Latin Grammy Awards for his solo works and remains a primary influence on modern Brazilian accordion players. He passed away in 2013 due to complications from lung cancer, leaving behind a vast discography that bridges the gap between traditional folk and urban Brazilian popular music.
