Biography

Domingos da Costa Ferreira, better known as Dominguinhos do Estácio, was one of the most prominent singers and composers of samba-enredo in Rio de Janeiro's carnival history. Born in Rio de Janeiro, his artistic journey began in the late 1960s with Unidos de São Carlos as both a composer and a singer, eventually establishing himself as a legendary voice of the Avenue across multiple decades.

Throughout his illustrious career, Dominguinhos lent his powerful voice to several iconic samba schools, including Imperatriz Leopoldinense, Estácio de Sá, Acadêmicos do Grande Rio, and Unidos do Viradouro. He achieved historic victories, such as winning Imperatriz's first Special Group title in 1980 with the samba-enredo "O que é que a Bahia tem?", co-authored with Darcy do Nascimento, and leading Viradouro to its first top-tier championship in 1997. Alongside collaborators like Wander Pires and Zé Paulo Sierra, his unforgettable performance of anthems like "Liberdade, Liberdade, Abra as Asas Sobre Nós" cemented his legacy as a titan of Brazilian carnival culture.

Outside of the sambadrome, Dominguinhos released several solo albums and participated in the notable vocal group Puxadores do Samba alongside artists like Preto Jóia and Serginho do Porto. He earned numerous accolades throughout his career, including multiple Estandarte de Ouro and Tamborim de Ouro awards for best interpreter. Dominguinhos do Estácio passed away in May 2021, leaving behind an enduring legacy in Brazilian samba and popular music.
