Biography

Gabriel Linhares da Rocha, known artistically as Don L, is a pivotal figure in the Brazilian rap scene. Born in Brasília and raised in Fortaleza, he co-founded the influential hip-hop group Costa a Costa with Nego Gallo. The group gained significant national recognition in 2006 after winning the Prêmio Hutúz, a major award in Brazilian hip-hop, in the North/Northeast category. This early success marked Don L as a key artist in bringing visibility to the hip-hop movement in Brazil's northern and northeastern regions.

Following the dissolution of Costa a Costa, Don L embarked on a solo career, relocating to São Paulo in 2013. He independently released his first solo mixtape, "Caro Vapor/Vida e Veneno de Don L," which featured collaborations with artists like Flora Matos and production by Papatinho. His solo work is characterized by its lyrical depth, social commentary, and experimental approach to sound, often blending classic hip-hop beats with Brazilian rhythms and cultural references. His discography includes acclaimed albums such as "Roteiro Pra Aïnouz, Vol. 3" and "Roteiro Pra Aïnouz, Vol. 2."

Don L is widely regarded as one of the most innovative and influential rappers in Brazil, often referred to as "the favorite rapper of your favorite rapper." His artistic vision extends beyond music, incorporating cinematic elements and profound social and political critiques into his work. He has received accolades such as being named Artist of the Year by the Associação Paulista de Críticos de Arte (APCA) in 2021.
