Biography

Dorsal Atlântica is a pioneering Brazilian thrash metal band founded in Rio de Janeiro in 1981. Emerging during the military dictatorship, the group started as Ness before adopting their current name inspired by the Dadaist movement. They released foundational works like the Ultimatum split and their 1986 debut album Antes do Fim, establishing themselves as key figures in the underground metal scene alongside contemporaries like Sepultura.

Throughout the decades, the band pushed musical boundaries by incorporating progressive, esoteric, and conceptual elements into their thrash style, notably with ambitious releases like the world's first thrash opera Searching for the Light in 1990 and Alea Jacta Est in 1994. Despite enduring struggles with distribution, self-management, and industry resistance, they earned critical acclaim both domestically and internationally. After a hiatus that began in 2001, founder Carlos Lopes successfully revived the band in 2012 through pioneering crowdfunding efforts, leading to new albums such as Imperium and Canudos.

The group's legacy remains deeply influential within extreme music in Brazil, paving the way for numerous subsequent heavy metal and hardcore acts. Their journey documented the trials of independent heavy music in South America, bridging raw underground energy with complex musicality.
