Biography

Washington Roberto Santana, artistically known as Dum Dum, was a Brazilian rapper born in São Paulo on March 25, 1970. He became a prominent figure in the national rap scene, especially as one of the vocalists of the group Facção Central. His nickname "Dum Dum" was given to him by his grandmother, in reference to a comic book character.

Dum Dum began his musical journey in 1989, joining Facção Central, a group known for its hard-hitting lyrics addressing the reality of the outskirts, police violence, hunger, and social injustice. Alongside Eduardo Taddeo, he was one of the pillars of the group, which stood out for its gangsta rap style and protest lyrics, influencing generations of artists and facing censorship on several occasions. The group released landmark albums such as "Movimento Rap Vol. 1" (1993), "Estamos de Luto" (1998), and "Versos Sangrantes" (1999).

His career was marked by a strong connection to Brazilian social reality, using music as a tool for denunciation and expression. Dum Dum passed away on May 12, 2023, at the age of 54, following complications from a stroke, leaving a significant legacy for Brazilian hip hop. Artists such as Racionais MC's and other names in national rap mourned his passing, recognizing his importance and contribution to the culture.
