Biography

The Dupla Preto e Branco was a Brazilian vocal duo that emerged in the early 1930s, gaining prominence in Rio de Janeiro's music scene. Formed by Herivelto Martins and Francisco Sena, the duo was known for its innovative vocal arrangements, which were considered groundbreaking at the time. Their performances at the Cine Odeon in 1933 caught the attention of entrepreneur Vicente Marzullo, leading to their professional debut and the adoption of their distinctive name, inspired by a samba they performed.

The duo's first record was released in 1934, featuring sambas like "Quatro horas" and "Preto e branco." They continued to release music, including marches and sambas, collaborating with renowned musicians like Bonfiglio de Oliveira and his orchestra. Despite their solo recordings and performances, they remained active with the Conjunto Tupy, performing in various venues. The early success of Dupla Preto e Branco paved the way for future collaborations and musical developments.

The original lineup of Dupla Preto e Branco concluded in 1935 with the passing of Francisco Sena. However, the musical legacy of Herivelto Martins continued. Martins later incorporated Dalva de Oliveira and Nilo Chagas, eventually forming the highly successful vocal group Trio de Ouro. This evolution marked a significant chapter in Brazilian music history, with Trio de Ouro becoming one of the most celebrated ensembles of its era.
