Biography

Edivaldo Pereira Alves, widely known as Edi Rock, was born in São Paulo on September 20, 1970. He began his artistic journey in 1984, playing at house parties alongside KL Jay, a partnership that would culminate in 1988 on the outskirts of São Paulo in the foundation of the celebrated rap group Racionais MC's, alongside Mano Brown and Ice Blue as well. As a songwriter, he penned striking tracks such as "Mágico de Oz", "Tempos Difíceis", "Negro Drama" and "A Vida é Desafio".

In addition to his fundamental work in Racionais MC's, Edi Rock developed a solid solo career, marked by releases such as "Rapaz Comum II", "Contra Nós Ninguém Será" and "Origens". The artist also carried out notable partnerships with various names in national and international music, including the acclaimed success "That's My Way", released in 2012 featuring Seu Jorge, in addition to collaborations with groups like RZO and O Rappa.

His cultural and social contribution to Brazilian music was institutionally recognized when he received the title of Doctor Honoris Causa from the Institute of Philosophy and Human Sciences at Unicamp in March 2025. Throughout decades of activity, he has established himself as one of the most influential voices in national rap and peripheral resistance.
