Biography

Edmundo Rosa Souto was born in Belém do Pará, on March 30, 1942, moving to Rio de Janeiro in his childhood. He studied acoustic guitar with Oscar Castro Neves and graduated in Architecture from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, later balancing his artistic production with other professional activities.

His artistic career gained great prominence in the popular music festivals of the 1960s. Alongside partners such as Danilo Caymmi and Paulinho Tapajós, he composed classics like "Andança", which won third place in the national phase of the International Song Festival in 1968, as well as "Cantiga por Luciana", winner of the same festival the following year.

In addition to his strong presence in the festival movement, Edmundo Souto composed soundtracks for Rede Globo soap operas, wrote samba-plots, and penned children's works. His vast musical production features notable partnerships alongside major names in MPB, such as Beth Carvalho and Jorge Aragão.
