Biography
Ednardo, artistic name of José Ednardo Soares Costa Sousa, was born in Fortaleza on April 17, 1945. A Brazilian singer and songwriter, he studied piano in his youth and graduated in Chemical Engineering from the Federal University of Ceará before consolidating his artistic career. In the 1970s, he joined the acclaimed movement known as Pessoal do Ceará, alongside important names in national culture such as Fagner, Belchior, Amelinha, and Fausto Nilo. His original work totals hundreds of compositions recorded by dozens of interpreters and spread across various albums of national and international projection.
The artist achieved major national projection in 1976 with the hit "Pavão Mysteriozo", which became the opening theme of the Rede Globo soap opera Saramandaia. In addition to his career as a performer and composer of soundtracks for theater, cinema, and television, Ednardo stood out for his cultural and political activism, leading during the Military Dictatorship the Massafeira Livre movement, which brought together dozens of artists at the José de Alencar Theater. Throughout his career, he also produced the film Cauim and continued to release striking works, such as the historic album Sarau vox 72.
His contribution to Brazilian popular music reverberates across more than four decades of a career marked by fundamental records and partnerships with poets and musicians from his homeland. Songs like "Terral" and "A Palo Seco" cemented his name in the history of MPB and northeastern songbook. Ednardo is the father of actress Joana Limaverde and continues to be a fundamental reference of Ceará's music for Brazil and the world.
