Biography
Carlos Eduardo Ribeiro, known professionally as Edu Ribeiro, is a prominent Brazilian singer and songwriter recognized as a key figure in the country's reggae scene. Born in São Paulo and raised between Taboão da Serra, Salvador, and even a period in Luanda, Angola, his early musical journey began in 1993 with the group M.R.N. Movimento e Ritmo Negro, where he collaborated with DJ Cia. After connecting with the vibrant artistic community at Sarau do KVA in Pinheiros, he eventually formed the successful university forró band Circuladô de Fulô in 2000, selling over 80,000 copies with their EMI-backed album.
Seeking a return to his roots in reggae, Edu Ribeiro launched his solo career in 2005 with the album Roots Reggae Classics Vol. 1 e Outras Canções, featuring collaborations with artists like Alexandre Carlo from Natiruts. His major national breakthrough came in 2006 with the release of his live album and the mega-hit single Me Namora, which became one of the most played tracks on Brazilian radio and was later featured as the soundtrack for the telenovela Bicho do Mato. His distinctive vocal style and catchy melodies cemented his status in the genre, often drawing comparisons to Natiruts.
Throughout his career, Ribeiro continued to expand his discography with projects like the 2007 album Luau, which included the hit De Mais Ninguém and a collaboration with Chorão from Charlie Brown Jr. on the track Você por perto. By performing across major television programs and solidifying his presence in Brazilian reggae, he established a lasting legacy in popular music. His journey from underground São Paulo movements to national stardom highlights his enduring influence on contemporary Brazilian reggae.
