Biography
Edy Star, stage name of Edivaldo Souza, was born in Juazeiro in 1938 and built a multifaceted career as a singer, songwriter, actor, dancer, and visual artist. Moving to Salvador in his childhood, he had early contact with the artistic milieu and rock and roll, hanging out with names like Raul Seixas, Caetano Veloso, and Maria Bethânia. His inclination toward the avant-garde and revue theater shaped a performative, irreverent, and provocative style that marked his career.
In the 1970s, he established himself in the underground scene by joining the collective album Sociedade da Grã-Ordem Kavernista Apresenta Sessão das 10, alongside Raul Seixas, Sérgio Sampaio, and Miriam Batucada. He became widely known for challenging social conventions, exploring androgyny and glam rock, besides having been the first Brazilian artist to publicly come out as homosexual. His performances in cabarets and nightclubs incorporated elements of humor, strip-tease, and parodies inspired by the group Dzi Croquettes and international productions.
After years of working in revue theater and musical productions, Edy Star lived in Spain for almost two decades, where he worked as a producer and visual artist. Upon his permanent return to Brazil in the late 2000s, he was rediscovered by contemporary audiences, culminating in the re-release of his work and the recording of new albums, such as Cabaré Star. Edy Star passed away in São Paulo in 2025, leaving a pioneering legacy of aesthetic and behavioral freedom in Brazilian culture.
