Biography

Egildo Vieira was a renowned Brazilian flutist, composer, and luthier born in Piranhas, Alagoas. He began his musical journey at the tender age of five, learning the clarinet under the guidance of master Nemézio Teixeira before performing with maestro Elísio José de Souza's band and co-founding the yé-yé-yé group The Boys Life. After moving to Maceió, he played in the group LSD alongside a young Djavan, and later joined the Grupo Artístico de Pesquisas Musicais de Alagoas (GAPEMA). His exceptional talent caught the attention of Ariano Suassuna, who invited him to join the prestigious Quinteto Armorial, with whom he recorded landmark albums such as Do Romance ao Galope Nordestino and Aralume.

Beyond his performance career, Vieira graduated in music from the Federal University of Pernambuco and dedicated himself to teaching, giving lectures, and leading pífano workshops across Brazil. He became a master luthier who crafted his own flutes using natural materials like bamboo, gourds, and coconut shells, developing a unique fingering scale that gained international recognition. Returning to his hometown of Piranhas later in life, he spearheaded cultural initiatives, founding the municipal conservatory and several musical groups to preserve and promote regional traditions. His profound contributions to Brazilian folk and armorial music earned him honors such as the Cavaleiro da Ordem do Mérito dos Palmares from the state of Alagoas.
