Biography

Elisa Byington is a Brazilian artist working in the fields of criticism, curation, and cultural production, in addition to having a solid academic background in Art History and Sociology. Born in São Paulo, she also holds Italian citizenship and moved to Italy after graduating from PUC-RJ to deepen her studies at the University of Rome – La Sapienza. There, she dedicated herself to aesthetics, philology, and art history, culminating in a thesis on Giorgio Vasari, a seminal figure for Art History. Her post-doctoral research focused on the diffusion of Renaissance models in international art.

Throughout her career, Elisa Byington has published several essays in books, specialized magazines, and catalogs, addressing both Italian Renaissance and Baroque art and contemporary art. Among her notable publications are "O projeto do Renascimento" and "Giorgio Vasari, a invenção do artista moderno". Her work as an independent curator is also notable, having organized exhibitions for renowned artists such as Elisa Bracher, Marcia Xavier, José Damasceno, Gianni Ratto, and Iole de Freitas, in addition to important commemorative events, such as the exhibition on the 500th anniversary of Giorgio Vasari.

Elisa Byington is recognized for her contribution to the debate and dissemination of art, connecting different periods and artistic manifestations. Her career demonstrates a deep connection with European art history, while actively integrating into the Brazilian cultural scene, promoting dialogue between the past and the present. She is the niece of Pérola Byington, an important Brazilian philanthropist and social activist, and the great-granddaughter of Alberto Byington, an industrial pioneer in Brazil.
