Biography

Elke Maravilha, born Elke Grünupp, was a German-Brazilian television personality, model, actress, and activist who became an iconic figure in Brazilian culture. Emigrating with her family to Brazil in 1949 after fleeing post-World War II poverty in Europe, she grew up in Minas Gerais and São Paulo before eventually settling in Rio de Janeiro. Before her rise to fame in the entertainment industry, she worked as a translator, a multilingual secretary, and a language teacher, utilizing her fluency in several languages.

Her career in the spotlight began in 1969 when she started working as a fashion model, quickly gaining renown for her striking height, natural blond hair, and innovative, extravagant style on the runways. She adopted the stage name Elke Maravilha and achieved widespread television popularity throughout the 1970s and 1980s as a judge on popular variety shows hosted by Chacrinha and Silvio Santos. Alongside her television work, she established a notable career as an actress, appearing in prominent Brazilian films such as Xica da Silva and Pixote, as well as performing in theater.

Throughout her life, Elke developed close ties with many significant Brazilian cultural figures, including the fashion designer Zuzu Angel and the entertainer Grande Otelo. Known for her vibrant personality, positive messaging, and flamboyant appearance featuring colorful wigs and striking costumes, she left an enduring mark on Brazilian television and fashion. She passed away in Rio de Janeiro in 2016, leaving behind a legacy as a beloved and singular icon of the nation's arts and entertainment scene.
