Biography
Ernesto de Souza was a Brazilian pharmacist and composer, born in Rio de Janeiro in 1864. He made a fortune as a pharmaceutical industrialist, with popular products like Trinoz and Rhum Creosotado, the latter remembered for its extensive advertising campaign that continued even after his death. Souza was also a playwright and instrumentalist, and hosted theatrical presentations in his home, featuring amateur artists from his neighborhood.
His musical career began in his youth, with performances at his home. He composed several successful songs, including "Mulata da Bahia," "Me Compra Yoyô?," and the very popular "Angu do Barão." Starting in 1902, his compositions were recorded by renowned artists such as Bahiano and Senhorita Odette. Souza also contributed verses for commercial advertisements and poems to various magazines, some of which were later compiled in the book "Galhardetes."
He was a contemporary and collaborator of other artists of his time, notably being credited with the song "Preta mina" in association with Xisto Bahia, a prominent actor, singer, and composer. Souza's work reflects the popular music styles of his era, contributing to the rich tapestry of Brazilian music at the turn of the 20th century.
