Biography

Ernesto Pires de Lima Neto, born in Rio de Janeiro on January 31, 1957, is a Brazilian singer and composer deeply rooted in the samba tradition. His musical journey began in childhood, receiving his first guitar at age seven and showing an early talent for percussion, participating in street parades. He honed his skills playing in various samba circles in Rio de Janeiro, notably at the renowned Bip Bip establishment, where he connected with established sambistas. Pires's career gained momentum with the release of his debut CD, "Novos Quilombos," in 2000, which featured compositions by renowned artists and his own original works. This album marked his entry into the samba anthologies without the backing of the mainstream music industry.

Pires's artistic output is characterized by its authentic samba sound, often described as having "suingue" (swing), "bossa" (style), and "malandragem" (a certain street smartness). He has collaborated and shared stages with numerous prominent figures in Brazilian music, including Wilson Moreira, Monarco, Dona Ivone Lara, Nelson Sargento, Arlindo Cruz, Zeca Pagodinho, Beth Carvalho, and Elza Soares. His second album, "Mestiço," released in 2010, further showcased his talent and included collaborations with artists like João de Aquino, who produced the album.

Beyond his recordings, Ernesto Pires has been an active participant in significant cultural events, such as the "Trem do Samba" and annual New Year's Eve celebrations in Rio de Janeiro. He has also contributed to the revitalization of the Lapa neighborhood in Rio through various shows in prestigious venues like Carioca da Gema and Rio Scenarium. His influence extends to international performances, including shows in Sesimbra, Portugal, in 2010. Pires's dedication to preserving and promoting traditional samba has solidified his place as a respected interpreter and composer within the genre.
