Biography
Evaldo Gouveia de Oliveira was a renowned Brazilian musician, singer, composer, and classical guitar player born in Iguatu, Ceará. Showing musical talent from an early age, he began singing publicly in his childhood before eventually moving to Fortaleza, where he pursued his passion for the guitar while working various jobs. His early career gained momentum when he joined a local radio ensemble and later founded the Trio Nagô in 1950 alongside Mário Alves and Epaminondas de Souza. The trio achieved national prominence through performances on prominent radio stations and venues across Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo.
In 1958, Gouveia formed a legendary songwriting partnership with Jair Amorim, which skyrocketed his career as a composer. Together, they crafted over 150 songs over the span of a decade, specializing in romantic boleros and samba-canções that defined an era of Brazilian popular music. Their works became major hits for iconic interpreters of the genre, most notably Altemar Dutra, who found massive success with compositions like "Tudo de Mim" and "Que Queres Tu de Mim". Other notable artists such as Nélson Gonçalves, Anísio Silva, and Agnaldo Rayol also recorded their timeless melodies.
Throughout his prolific career, Gouveia's compositions were performed and recorded by a vast array of Brazilian music legends, including Maysa, Ângela Maria, Cauby Peixoto, and Gal Costa. His profound contributions to the romantic songbook cemented his legacy as a pillar of Brazilian culture. Gouveia passed away in Fortaleza in May 2020 at the age of 89, leaving behind an indelible mark on the nation's musical heritage.
