Biography

Fábio Carvalho de Souza is a Brazilian cultural producer, filmmaker, and musician hailing from Vitória, Espírito Santo. He first gained prominence as a member of the influential band Manimal, which was active from 1986 to 2008 and pioneered "rockongo"—a unique musical fusion of traditional Espírito Santo congo rhythms with modern rock elements. In addition to his performance work, he earned a bachelor's degree in music from the Federal University of Espírito Santo and has dedicated much of his life to preserving and celebrating Afro-Brazilian folk traditions, collaborating with artists such as Marcel Dadalto and Léo Caetano.

In 2015, Fábio Carvalho released his critically acclaimed debut solo album, Quintal Afro Congo Beat, which seamlessly blends traditional rhythms like congo, jongo, ticumbi, and samba with contemporary electronic sounds and string arrangements. Demonstrating a deep commitment to cultural preservation, he also directed the 2013 documentary O Congueiro do Santo Preto, honoring the life and legacy of master congo player Mestre Antônio Rosa. His efforts extend deeply into community advocacy, where he coordinates the Centro Cultural Caíeiras, organizes cultural festivals such as Torta Black, and serves in numerous municipal and national cultural policy councils.

Throughout his career, Carvalho's vital contributions to regional culture have earned him widespread recognition and numerous awards from legislative assemblies and municipal chambers. His work bridges the gap between historical folklore and modern production, placing him alongside other cultural champions of Brazilian roots music like Hermeto Pascoal and Gilberto Gil. By keeping traditional instruments like the casaca and sacred drumbeats alive within contemporary compositions, he continues to shape the cultural landscape of southeastern Brazil.
