Biography

Fafá de Belém, born Maria de Fátima Palha de Figueiredo in Belém, Pará, is one of the most prominent and celebrated voices of Brazilian Popular Music (MPB). Emerging onto the artistic scene in the 1970s, she quickly established herself through a diverse repertoire that seamlessly integrated traditional northern Brazilian rhythms like carimbó with romantic ballads, fado, and MPB classics. Her professional debut arrived in 1975 with the song "Filha da Bahia," featured on the soundtrack of the telenovela Gabriela, paving the way for her critically acclaimed debut album Tamba-Tajá in 1976.

Throughout her career, Fafá became deeply intertwined with Brazilian political and social movements. During the Diretas-Já campaign in the 1980s, she performed for massive crowds and famously released a white dove at the end of her shows, cementing her status as the muse of the movement. Her powerful interpretations of national anthems and politically charged songs, such as "O Menestrel das Alagoas," highlighted her cultural impact. Over decades of recording, she shared stages and television specials with legendary figures such as Maria Bethânia, Gal Costa, Caetano Veloso, and Chico Buarque.

Fafá's enduring legacy extends beyond Brazil, enjoying profound popularity and a dual nationality in Portugal, where she has recorded acclaimed fado projects. In 2015, she celebrated her 40-year career with the album Do Tamanho Certo para o Meu Sorriso, paying homage to the brega style of Pará. Honored with numerous awards and tributes—including being the theme of the Império de Casa Verde samba school in 2024—Fafá de Belém remains a dynamic pillar of Brazilian culture, celebrated for her vocal prowess and fierce advocacy of Amazonian roots.
