Biography

Raimundo Fagner Cândido Lopes, known simply as Fagner, is a celebrated Brazilian singer, composer, musician, actor, and producer. Born in Orós, Ceará, on October 13, 1949, Fagner is the youngest of five children. His father was a Lebanese immigrant, and his mother's family was musical, instilling in him an early love for music. He won a children's singing contest at the age of six and formed musical groups during his adolescence, beginning to compose his own songs.

Fagner's career gained national traction after he moved to Brasília in 1970 to study architecture. He participated in the Festival de Música Popular do Centro de Estudos Universitários de Brasília, where his song "Mucuripe" (co-written with Belchior) won first place. This success, along with other accolades at the festival, brought him to the attention of the music industry in southeastern Brazil. His song "Mucuripe" was later recorded by Elis Regina, further solidifying his presence in the national music scene.

Throughout his extensive career, Fagner has become a significant figure in Música Popular Brasileira (MPB). He is known for his distinctive vocal timbre and poetic lyrics, often blending regional Northeastern influences with broader musical styles. Fagner has collaborated with numerous artists, both Brazilian and international, including Mercedes Sosa, Zé Ramalho, and Zeca Baleiro, and his music has been featured in film and television soundtracks. He is recognized for his versatility and his enduring contribution to Brazilian music.
