Biography
Far From Alaska is a prominent Brazilian rock band formed in 2012 in Natal, Rio Grande do Norte, and later based in São Paulo. The group's original lineup consisted of vocalist Emmily Barreto, guitar player Rafael Brasil, keyboardist Cris Botarelli, bassist Edu Filgueira, and drummer Lauro Kirsch. Bringing together members from various previous musical projects such as Talma&Gadelha and Planant, the band quickly gained national attention by winning a talent contest that earned them a spot opening the Planeta Terra Festival just months after their formation. Their English-language lyrics and heavy alternative rock sound drew praise from international figures like Garbage vocalist Shirley Manson.
In 2014, the band released their critically acclaimed debut studio album, modeHuman, which blended energetic rock with alternative textures and spawned several promotional videos. Relocating to São Paulo by the end of 2014 to better manage their growing logistics, Far From Alaska continued to expand their presence in the Brazilian festival circuit, performing at Lollapalooza Brazil and the Maximus Festival, while also collaborating with acts like Scalene and Ego Kill Talent. Their sophomore album, Unlikely, was released in 2017 after a successful crowdfunding campaign and recording sessions in the United States produced with the help of producer Sylvia Massy, leading to international performances including the French edition of the Download Festival.
Over the years, the band experienced lineup shifts, with Edu Filgueira and Lauro Kirsch departing, prompting Cris Botarelli to take on bass duties as the group transitioned into a leaner formation. Continuing to innovate, they released acoustic reinterpretations, collaborative singles with artists like Fresno and Lenine, and a series of EPs culminating in further studio work. Through relentless touring and distinct stylistic choices, Far From Alaska has solidified its status as a vital force in contemporary Brazilian independent rock.
