Biography

Fernanda Abreu is a pioneering Brazilian singer, songwriter, and dancer, widely celebrated as the mother of Brazilian dance-pop. Born in Rio de Janeiro, she initially trained as a professional ballerina before rising to prominence in the early 1980s as a backing vocalist for the iconic rock band Blitz. Transitioning to a solo career in 1990 with her debut album SLA Radical Dance Disco Club, she introduced electronic beats, sampling, and elaborate choreography to the Brazilian mainstream, bridging the gap between underground club culture and commercial radio.

Throughout her career, Abreu has continually blended pop music with genres like funk, hip-hop, disco, and R&B, notably on critically acclaimed albums such as SLA 2 Be Sample and Da Lata. Her landmark 1992 hit "Rio 40 Graus" became a defining anthem of urban Brazilian music, bringing the realities of Rio de Janeiro's suburbs and marginalized rhythms directly to the forefront of the national conversation. Over the decades, she has shared artistic connections with notable figures of Brazilian music such as Evandro Mesquita, Lobão, and Fausto Fawcett, cementing her legacy as an enduring innovator of Brazilian pop.
