Biography

Fernando Barreto was a Brazilian composer born on March 9, 1918, in São João da Barra, Rio de Janeiro. He passed away on January 15, 1988, in Duque de Caxias, Rio de Janeiro. Barreto developed an early interest in music, even following his local band as a child. He eventually joined the São João da Barra band at the age of 14 and later served in the army.

His musical career gained significant traction in 1959 when his samba-toada "Esmeralda," co-written with Filadelfo Nunes, was first recorded by José Bittencourt. The song became a major hit, widely played on Brazilian radio throughout the 1960s and 1970s, and was covered by prominent artists such as Jair Rodrigues and Neguinho da Beija Flor. "Esmeralda" was also recorded by Carlos José in 1960, further cementing its popularity.

Throughout his career, Barreto composed various other songs, including "E os Anjos Cantaram" (with Walter Paiva), "Minha Canção" (with Gerson Gonçalves), and "Sou De Caxias" (with Antônio Motta), a tribute to the city of Duque de Caxias. His compositions spanned genres like samba-toada, samba-canção, bolero, and ballads, showcasing his versatility as a songwriter. He collaborated with numerous artists and lyricists, contributing to the rich landscape of Brazilian popular music.
