Biography

Flávia Muniz is a Brazilian singer, songwriter, and writer, born in Rio de Janeiro in 1976. She holds a degree in Brazilian Popular Music from UNIRIO, where she studied under notable musicians such as Luis Otávio Braga and Roberto Gnattali. Muniz's musical journey began in 1993 with her first band, 1999, which released two albums. She later became the lead singer for the indie-pop band Luisa Mandou Um Beijo, recording three albums and contributing to compilations in various countries, earning the "Prêmio Catavento" in 2010. Her solo career has seen the release of several albums, including "Descalços Sobre A Terra" (2012), "O que a Terra quer ver" (2016), "Do Firmamento até a Terra" (2021), "CD4" (2019), and "E agora eu sou o mar" (2020). Muniz also participated in the recording of the Spanish band Llum's album "Limelight" (2012) and released the single "Mãe d'água" in 2014. Beyond her music career, Flávia Muniz is also an accomplished author, having published seven books, primarily for children and young adults, with some of her works being recognized with nominations for the Prêmio Jabuti and the Prêmio APCA. She has also written scripts for children's television programs.

Muniz's music is characterized by its rich rhythms, harmonies, and arrangements, often paying homage to the classic sounds of Rio de Janeiro. Her lyrical themes are frequently inspired by nature, reflecting her deep connection to the environment. In 2007, she experienced a significant health challenge, spending time in a coma, which necessitated a period of recovery where she had to relearn basic functions. This experience profoundly influenced her creative output, leading her to channel her strength into writing and music. Her recovery was bolstered by her continued work with Luisa Mandou Um Beijo and her burgeoning solo career.

Flávia Muniz's artistic endeavors extend beyond music and writing. She has also pursued studies in transverse flute and cavaquinho at the Escola Portátil de Música and taken popular singing classes with Suely Mesquita. Furthering her guitar studies at Casa do Choro, she also participated in ASA 2022 (Arte Sônica Amplificada), a music program for women organized by Oi Futuro and British Council. Her work as a writer has also been recognized, with several of her books being selected for the PNBE (National Literature Program for Basic Education) and receiving accolades.
