Biography

Forro in the Dark is a world music band founded in 2002 in New York City, United States, composed of talented Brazilian musicians. The group is known for blending the rhythmic, percussion-rich dance music of traditional forró with elements of rock, folk, jazz, and country, utilizing various instruments such as guitars, timbal, and pífano.

The band's origins trace back to a jam session organized by percussionist Mauro Refosco at the East Village nightclub Nublu, which quickly transformed into a weekly residency. Their vibrant performances caught the attention of prominent artists like David Byrne and Bebel Gilberto, both of whom contributed to the group's acclaimed 2006 debut album, Bonfires of São João. Following extensive touring across the United States, Canada, and Europe, the band collaborated with Steve Earle on his Grammy-winning album Washington Square Serenade.

Continuing their musical evolution, Forro in the Dark released the EP Dia de Roda in 2008, followed by their second full-length album, Light a Candle, in 2009. The sophomore record featured guest appearances by Sabina Sciubba of Brazilian Girls and Jesse Harris, alongside inventive covers of classic Brazilian forró tracks. Over the years, members like Mauro Refosco have also participated in high-profile projects, including Atoms for Peace alongside Thom Yorke and Flea.
