Biography

Fundo de Quintal is a legendary Brazilian samba group formed in Rio de Janeiro during the 1970s, originating from the traditional samba circles of the Cacique de Ramos carnival block. Created by foundational members such as Bira Presidente, Ubirany, and Sereno, the group revolutionized the samba genre by introducing new instruments like the tantã, repique de mão, and banjo, while deeply anchoring their musical style in the tradition of partido alto. Their innovative sound and immense popularity helped establish pagode as a major subgenre of Brazilian samba, earning them critical acclaim and commercial success through numerous gold and platinum albums.

The group's official formation was catalyzed by the support of renowned singer Beth Carvalho and producer Rildo Hora, who discovered the vibrant suburban jam sessions at Cacique de Ramos and invited the musicians to participate in studio recordings. Throughout their decades-long career, the lineup featured legendary figures of Brazilian samba and composition, including Almir Guineto, Jorge Aragão, Sombrinha, Arlindo Cruz, and Cleber Augusto, many of whom later launched successful solo careers while continuing to contribute timeless compositions. Despite the passing of time and various lineup changes following the departures and losses of key members, Fundo de Quintal remained an enduring institution of Brazilian popular culture, prioritizing live performances and cementing their legacy as the ultimate paradigm of pagode.
