Biography

José Gabriel de Souza Diniz, known professionally as Gabriel Diniz, was a prominent Brazilian singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist. Born in Campo Grande, he was raised in João Pessoa, Paraíba, where he first gained local attention singing at university parties while studying electrical engineering. His charismatic stage presence soon led him to front several notable forró bands, including Forró na Farra, Capim com Mel, and Cavaleiros do Forró.

Transitioning to a successful solo career, Diniz released several albums such as GD Verão, GD, and À Vontade, blending traditional forró with swingueira and incorporating prominent percussion elements like congas and surdos. He collaborated with numerous major figures in Brazilian music, including Wesley Safadão, Gusttavo Lima, Jorge & Mateus, and Simone & Simaria. His innovative musical style and vibrant aesthetic culminated in his massive nationwide smash hit "Jenifer," which became the defining anthem of the 2019 Brazilian summer and Carnival.

Tragically, Diniz's career was cut short when he died in a plane crash in Sergipe in May 2019, while traveling to celebrate his girlfriend's birthday. His untimely passing deeply shook the Brazilian music community and drew international media attention. Despite his brief life, he left an enduring legacy in northeastern forró and contemporary Brazilian popular music.
