Biography

Gabriel Mercury is a Brazilian singer, songwriter, and music producer born in Salvador, Bahia. The son of the iconic axé music superstar Daniela Mercury and electronic engineer Zalther Póvoas, Gabriel initially pursued a career in equestrianism, even representing Brazil in the Pan American Games. However, his musical calling took over at the age of 14 when he began playing the guitar. By the age of 15, his composition \"Aeromoça\" was already being recorded for one of his mother's major studio albums.

Throughout his career, Gabriel has balanced academic pursuits in administration and philosophy with formal musical training, including a period at the American School of Modern Music in Paris. He also refined his technical and aesthetic understanding of samba under the tutelage of Aderbal Duarte, a renowned scholar of the style pioneered by João Gilberto. This blend of formal education and his deep roots in the Bahian music scene allowed him to transition into film scoring, where he co-authored the soundtrack for the movie \"Canta Maria\" alongside Daniela Mercury.

His recording debut, the album \"Incompleto,\" showcased a collaborative spirit, featuring appearances by the Afro-Brazilian group Ilê Aiyê and musicians such as Fred Dantas and Rowney Scott. As a songwriter, Gabriel's work has been interpreted by various Brazilian artists, including Vania Abreu and Bruno Masi, solidifying his reputation as a versatile talent within the MPB (Música Popular Brasileira) landscape.
