Biography

Garotos Podres is a prominent Brazilian punk rock band formed in late 1982 in the city of Mauá, within the ABC Paulista region. Known for their political engagement and socially conscious lyrics infused with irony and dark humor, the group emerged during the Brazilian military dictatorship and quickly became a voice for the underground scene. Their landmark 1985 debut album, "Mais Podres do que Nunca", broke independent sales records and marked them as the first Brazilian punk band to achieve mainstream radio airplay, paving the way for other underground acts.

Throughout their career, the band expanded their reach internationally, releasing records through European and American labels and touring extensively across countries like Portugal, Spain, and Germany. Despite enduring periods of censorship on several of their satirical tracks, they maintained a fiercely independent ethos, with members keeping outside jobs to preserve their artistic freedom. Their enduring influence on alternative rock in Brazil was celebrated in 2002 with the tribute album "Tributo Garotos Podres – 20 anos de Podridão", featuring prominent national groups such as Ratos de Porão and Inocentes.

In subsequent decades, the band navigated internal political divisions and lineup changes, including founder Mao briefly establishing O Satânico Dr. Mao e os Espiões Secretos before returning to the Garotos Podres banner. Their discography continued to grow with releases like the digital EP "Canções de Resistência" in 2018. Cementing their legacy in Brazilian punk history, they remain celebrated for their uncompromising energy and enduring socio-political commentary.
