Biography

Gastão Villeroy is a prominent Brazilian bassist, singer, composer, arranger, and producer, hailing from São Gabriel, Rio Grande do Sul. He began his musical journey in Porto Alegre, where he moved at the age of nine. His early exposure to music came from his father, Gil Villeroy, an amateur pianist and composer, who filled their home with diverse musical influences, from Tom Jobim to Bach and Frank Sinatra to The Beatles. Villeroy's formal training includes studies in harmony, arrangement, and composition with Maestro Ian Guest, as well as specialized training in acoustic and electric bass with Dener Campolina, Iury Popoff, and Jorge Helder, and guitar with Everson Vargas.

Villeroy has had a distinguished career as a sideman, collaborating with a vast array of renowned Brazilian and international artists. His extensive resume includes performances and recordings with musical giants such as Milton Nascimento, Caetano Veloso, Billy Cobham, David Liebman, Adriana Calcanhoto, Alceu Valença, Maria Gadú, and Lenine, among many others. He also formed the band "A Mursa" with his brothers and friends in his youth, playing progressive rock. Later, he formed "Grupo Escolar" with his brothers Antonio and Carlos Villeroy, marking the beginning of a long-standing musical partnership.

In 2016, Gastão Villeroy launched his solo career with the album "Amazônia, Amazônia," which featured collaborations with prominent artists like Milton Nascimento, Lenine, Maria Gadú, Seu Jorge, and Samuel Rosa. This was followed by "That Bossa Note" in 2022, an album that explores contemporary bossa nova with lyrics predominantly in English and themes of multiculturalism and self-awareness. Villeroy's music often blends Brazilian rhythms with jazz and Latin influences, showcasing his versatility and deep connection to the roots of Brazilian music while embracing contemporary trends.
