Gaúcho, born Antônio de Souza Leal, was a prominent Brazilian singer and composer who left an indelible mark on the country's musical landscape. Born in Rio de Janeiro in 1915, he began his musical journey in the bohemian circles of the Tijuca neighborhood in the 1930s.

His career gained significant traction in 1933 when he met Joel de Almeida, with whom he formed a successful duo. Together, they performed in parties and serenades, and in 1935, they achieved their first major success with the march "Estão batendo." This record also featured the samba "O chapéu é quem diz," a composition by Gaúcho himself, showcasing his burgeoning talent as a songwriter.

Throughout his career, Gaúcho was known for his contributions to samba and other popular Brazilian genres. His work, often characterized by its melodic richness and lyrical depth, resonated with audiences and solidified his place as a respected artist in Brazilian popular music. He passed away in 1981, leaving behind a legacy of beloved songs that continue to be celebrated.
