Biography
Genésio Sampaio Filho, known artistically as Genésio Tocantins, was born in Goiatins, Tocantins, on November 11, 1958. He is a self-taught singer, composer, and instrumentalist whose work is deeply rooted in the popular culture and music of his home state. Growing up, he learned to sing verses at local fairs from his father, a farmer, troubadour, and cordelista, and also participated in "rodas de folia" with his mother, where he learned religious chants. His early life also included moves to Araguaína in Tocantins and later to Ceres in Goiás.
Tocantins began his career participating in regional and national festivals. In 1988, he released his debut LP, "Rela Bucho," which earned him the "Revelação da Música Regional Brasileira" (Revelation of Brazilian Regional Music) award at the II Prêmio Sharp de Música the following year. He has since released other works, including "U Cantante" (1996) and "Brasis - As Canções e o Povo" (1998). His song "Nóis é Jeca Mais É Jóia," co-written with Juraíldes da Cruz, became a classic and brought him national recognition.
Throughout his career, Genésio Tocantins has collaborated with notable Brazilian artists such as Fagner, Pena Branca e Xavantinho, and Rolando Boldrin. He has also been recognized for his contributions to the cultural landscape of Palmas, Tocantins, where he has resided since 1989. His music often reflects the themes of rivers, fairs, and the people of his land, solidifying his place as a significant representative of Brazilian regional music.
