Biography

George Olivier Toni was a prominent Brazilian composer, conductor, bassoonist, and influential music educator.

Born in São Paulo on May 27, 1926, Toni's early musical education included studies with renowned figures such as Camargo Guarnieri and Hans Koellreutter. He distinguished himself not only as a composer of musical pieces but also as an orchestrator and conductor. His career was marked by a deep commitment to music education, leading him to found several significant institutions, including the Municipal School of Music of São Paulo in 1969 and the Department of Music at the University of São Paulo's School of Communications and Arts (ECA-USP) in 1970, where he later became an emeritus professor. He also established the São Paulo Youth Symphony Orchestra in 1968.

Toni's influence extended to his work as a performer and founder of musical ensembles. He was a founding member of the São Paulo State Symphony Orchestra (OSESP) and played the bassoon in the São Paulo Municipal Symphony Orchestra. He also created the São Paulo Chamber Orchestra and the São Paulo Municipal Youth Symphony Orchestra, serving as conductor and artistic director for both. His compositional work explored various aesthetic avenues, including serialism and modal music, often with a focus on Brazilian themes and influences. His final work, "Navio Negreiro" (2016), was inspired by Castro Alves' poem of the same name.

Throughout his career, Toni was recognized for his dedication to promoting Brazilian music and making music education accessible. He passed away in São Paulo on March 25, 2017, at the age of 90, leaving behind a rich legacy as a composer, educator, and cultural figure in Brazil.
