Biography

Born on April 29, 1946, in Cedro, Ceará, Geraldo Amancio Pereira is a prominent figure in Brazilian popular culture, celebrated as a poet, repentista (improvised folk singer), writer, and lecturer. His artistic journey began in his youth, inspired by the cantoria (traditional folk singing) he heard on the radio and encouraged by his uncle, also a poet. Amancio's early experiences included working on the land and absorbing the rich oral traditions of the Brazilian Northeast.

Amancio's career took flight in the early 1960s, participating in numerous cantoria festivals across Brazil, where he achieved over 150 first-place victories. His talent and dedication led him to international recognition, including an invitation to the World Poetry Festival in the Balearic Islands, Spain, where he was the sole Brazilian repentista. He has also been a featured performer at international book fairs in São Paulo and was honored at the International Book Biennial in Fortaleza.

Beyond his performances, Geraldo Amancio has made significant contributions to the preservation and promotion of Brazilian folk culture. He hosted television programs dedicated to viola music for 19 years and organized over a hundred cantoria festivals. His written works include numerous books on various themes, from historical figures like Antônio Conselheiro and Lampião to poetry collections and guides on verse-making. Amancio is also a recognized "Mestre da Cultura" (Master of Culture) by the State of Ceará, a testament to his profound knowledge and artistic mastery.
