Biography

Geraldo Eduardo Ribeiro Carneiro was born in Belo Horizonte on June 11, 1952, but moved to Rio de Janeiro in his childhood, in 1955. A poet, lyricist, playwright, and scriptwriter, he has stood out on the Brazilian cultural scene since the late 1960s, also being a member of the musical group A Barca do Sol. As a lyricist, he established important partnerships with names such as Eduardo Souto Neto, Egberto Gismonti, Francis Hime, and Wagner Tiso, having his compositions recorded by great MPB interpreters like Vinicius de Moraes, Tom Jobim, Gal Costa, and Ney Matogrosso.

In literature, he emerged as one of the prominent names of the so-called "marginal poetry" in the 1970s, making his book debut through the Frenesi collection. Throughout his literary trajectory, he has published several prominent works, such as Verão Vagabundo and Piquenique em Xanadu, a work that earned him the Lei Sarney Prize. His intellectual and artistic production led him to be elected, in October 2016, to the Brazilian Academy of Letters, occupying chair number 24.

In addition to poetry and music, Geraldo Carneiro has built a solid career as a playwright and scriptwriter for theater and television. He has written plays, translated classics by William Shakespeare, and adapted literary works for television, authoring scripts for highly acclaimed miniseries and telenovelas alongside partners such as João Ubaldo Ribeiro and Alcides Nogueira.
