Biography
Germano Augusto Coelho was a notable Portuguese composer and lyricist who built his career in Brazil, leaving a significant mark on Brazilian popular music, especially in samba. Born in Bragança, Portugal, on March 3, 1901, he migrated to Brazil at the beginning of the 20th century, where he settled and developed his artistic career. His work, marked by partnerships with several important names of the era, contributed to the rich repertoire of Brazilian samba.
His journey in music gained prominence starting in 1934, when his samba "Olha a Baiana", in partnership with Kid Pepe, was recorded by Orlando Silva. In the same year, "Implorar", a samba written by him along with J. da Silva Gaspar and Kid Pepe, was recorded by Moreira da Silva, becoming a major hit of the 1935 carnival and one of the biggest successes of the 1930s. The song sparked controversy regarding its original authorship, with claims that it had been sold by a deceased samba artist. Germano Augusto also collaborated with Noel Rosa, resulting in the recording of the samba "Se a Sorte me Ajudar" by Aurora Miranda and João Petra de Barros in 1934.
Throughout his career, Germano Augusto established fruitful partnerships with various composers, including Kid Pepe, Wilson Batista, and Zé da Zilda. His compositions were recorded by important performers such as Aracy de Almeida and Dircinha Batista, solidifying his name as one of the talents of the era. He passed away in Rio de Janeiro on May 10, 1950, leaving a legacy of sambas that continue to be remembered and appreciated in Brazilian music.
