Biography

Germano Mathias was a renowned Brazilian singer and songwriter, celebrated as a major representative of samba paulistano. Born in São Paulo, he became famous for his distinct syncopated vocal style and his unique musical accompaniment using a grease can lid, a technique inspired by the shoeshine boys of Praça da Sé during the early 1950s. His breakthrough came with his debut samba hit "Minha Nega na Janela," catapulting him to prominence after winning a talent show on Rádio Tupi in 1955. Throughout his career, he also became well-known for interpreting numerous compositions by Zé Keti.

Despite experiencing a period of obscurity and semi-retirement in the later decades, during which he worked as a criminal court bailiff, Germano maintained a lasting legacy in Brazilian music. He celebrated fifty years of artistic activity in 2005 and released various notable albums, including tributes to influential figures like Caco Velho. His unique contributions earned him recognition such as the Order of Ipiranga from the Government of São Paulo, cementing his status as a legendary figure of samba alongside contemporaries like Gilberto Gil and Maysa.
