Biography

Jorge Luiz de Souza, better known by his stage name Gigante Brazil, was a celebrated Brazilian drummer and singer born in Rio de Janeiro. He began his professional musical career in 1969 as a member of the band Massa Experiência before moving to São Paulo in 1972, where he famously accompanied artists like Jorge Mautner. Throughout his career, he became a pillar of the influential Vanguarda Paulista movement and gained widespread recognition for his work with the band Isca de Polícia, led by Itamar Assumpção.

As an in-demand studio and touring musician, Gigante Brazil collaborated with numerous icons of Brazilian popular music, including Marisa Monte, Gilberto Gil, Caetano Veloso, and Vânia Bastos. His precise drumming and distinctive vocal contributions—such as on Marisa Monte's hit track 'Ensaboa'—made him a foundational rhythmic force in various genres. Critics and peers frequently praised his versatility, noting his ability to anchor both complex improvisational sessions and gentle acoustic arrangements with equal mastery.

Gigante Brazil passed away in September 2008 at the age of 56 in São Paulo. Following his death, he received posthumous tributes, including a dedicated segment alongside Itamar Assumpção in the Pelô de Vanguarda show held in Salvador, featuring prominent figures like Arrigo Barnabé and Jards Macalé. His enduring legacy remains tied to the innovative spirit of São Paulo's alternative music scene and his contributions to the rich tapestry of MPB.
